Displayed during the 2003 Biennale di Venezia, Fragmented Peace is a 2 ton, 2.2 meter
(7.2 ft) tall by 2.2 meter wide, internally illuminated sculpture in the shape of
a Buddha made from welded stainless steel and filled with handmade Murano glass.
GMS worked to proportion the exterior wire "gabion" and design the internal sub-structure,
to which the gabion is tied. This offered a simple and effective way of minimizing
the mesh thickness, while maintaining the exterior shape, and concealing the inner
lighting and timer – an integral part of the artist’s concept.
