For a competition organized by the Department of Buildings, we redesigned the urban shed to address the practical concerns of urban dwellers, store and building owners, while also addressing the aesthetic issues in recognition that these sheds have a large scale, semi-permanent presence in our city. The strategy employs existing components and erection methods of the local scaffolding industry. Stiffer, stronger piers allow longer spans. Lateral stability is provided in two directions by frame action. Moment connections are provided between the columns and girders.
